Every child learns and develops at a slightly different rate. While there may not be a magic age for kids to begin taking piano lessons, here are a few things to consider:

The Alphabet
Music is based around the "musical alphabet"; A-B-C-D-E-F-G. For kids to have the best experience in lessons, they should be able to read and write the alphabet.
Beginning lessons for young children usually start off by numbering their fingers and learning where to place their fingers on they keys. However, very quickly, lessons will transition into note names, which will use the musical alphabet. The sooner your child knows their A-B-C's, the sooner they can begin piano lessons!
Showing Interest in Piano Lessons
It can be hard for children to know if they are interested in taking piano lessons. If this a new experience for them, they have know idea what to expect!
If your child is showing interest in playing an instrument, beginning piano lessons is a great place to start! Not only will it introduce a new skill, music helps our brains develop.
If your child is insure if they are interested in taking lessons, it may not be a bad idea to schedule a trial lesson, or enroll them in a one-week piano summer camp to see how they like it. If they are still unsure after a camp or a trial lesson, you can always sign them up for just a few lessons to give them some time to try it out. Within a few lessons, you'll be able to tell if your child is genuinely interested!
Ability to Follow Instructions
In order to make the most of their piano lesson, kids must be able to follow basic instructions. "Place your right hand on the keys" or "Be gentle while playing" might be the very simple instructions kids will need to follow.
Every kid is going to have days where it's harder than other to focus or follow along, and that's totally normal! If your child has a positive attitude and is willing to take instruction from adults, than they are on their way to being ready to start lessons!
Summary
After taking these things into consideration, you should know what's best for your child and if they seem ready to begin lessons! After all, as the parent, who knows them better!
On average, most young children that begin piano are between the ages of 6 and 9. This is a great age to start learning to play an instrument and develop an entirely new set of skills.
If you're still not sure, don't be afraid to talk to a music instructor or set up a trial lesson for you child!
